If thoughts can be substantiated into a human character, I would like to call him a “wanderer.” A person’s life, experience, feelings, visions, fantasies and daydreams would then all be projected through him. The term derives from “flâneur” created by Walter Benjamin (1892-1940). According to Benjamin, badauds let themselves to be pushed around by the crowd, but flâneurs need a space to turn around and would not give up the leisurely life of the elite. The “roamer” in my artworks, however, no longer feels content just walking in and out of the facades of shopping malls. He muinspiring elements that can be used as poetic rhymes—such are the trophies for him. He would do so composedly and detached, but not without passion and insight. The roamer has his faced painted in white because in this way he could more fully and vividly reflect my thoughts than expressing his own characters, just like “hitamen” in Noh or Kabuki.
