“Sun within the Sun” by Kao Tsan-shing Kao Tsan-shing graduated from the Sculpture Department in the Fine Art College at the National Taiwan University of Arts. His work “Sun within the Sun” resembles the shape of the Chinese character for “sun”. The theme of this work is similar to the “Play within a play” or “mystery within a mystery” themes in literature, which is an overlapping and repetitive effect in content and form. The upper and lower parts of the work have holes bored through them, giving the work an ever-changing spatial effect. There is a concentric circle in each of the holes, with one being tangible and the other being intangible, giving off the effect of circles within a circle and suns within suns. The work is clean and poised, made from stainless steel pieces that have been cut, lathed and welded together, stressing the essence of the spirit of sculpting. Tu wanted to emphasize all aspects of his work, including its spatial characteristics, weight, size and how it feels to the touch.
