Lu displayed as much concentration and perseverance as Italian painter Giorgio Morandi (1890-1964) did in devoting a lifetime to studying the same subject. Lu completed only 29 works in his life, all of which were either seascapes or still lifes (e.g., a vase and a glass on a table), a cigarette package being the sole exception. Each of these works was painted by imbricating soft colors over a period of years. Based on the rational, scientific spirit he acquired from his rigorous academic training, the artist deliberated on and verified his understanding of things (i.e., the relations between temperature, humidity, and texture, along with human perception and inner experience). Nevertheless, his paintings exude a heartwarming aura, as tranquil as they are elegant.
