Lee created this large-scale painting in 1996, its subject a banana plantation, a common sight in southern Taiwan. Betel nuts and bananas were the primary subjects of his paintings, consistent with his approach, which he based on nativist consciousness and folk customs. The bright sunny days, specialty crops, and the outspoken, straightforward people of southern Taiwan are manifest in the bold, untrammeled brushstrokes as well as the warm hues of yellow, brown and lime green that the artist used in this painting.
