Using unrestrained brushstrokes and gaudy colors characteristic of southern Taiwan, the artist reconfigured the Hokkien (Taiwanese language) transliteration of “rogue waves,” as the phenomenon is known along the coast of Taiwan, into a single written character. The portmanteau word is at the center-right of the composition, while the sky that occupies a quarter of the canvas and the vast sea rendered in similar hues make the word’s “font” resemble a deep-sea fishing vessel sailing across the raging sea, an image apart from the words’ homophonic connotation. Blending Chinese characters into his paintings became Lee’s signature practice, yet none of his works were as vivid and brilliant as this one in utilizing the intertextual resonance between words and images.
