台灣神木的風雲歲月 Glory of the God Tree Forest
油畫 Oil Painting

Since the 1960s, LIN Hsin-yueh has enjoyed using trees to shape his world of art. Glory of the God Tree Forest is also the artist’s only large-scale oil painting on “trees” since 2010. The artist especially utilizes old tree trunks to create balance and grandiosity. The high-rising trees stand peacefully in this painting; traces of time can be seen on them. Resilient, unbending and strong, the trees have all secured their spots between the sky and the earth. Sunshine casts itself upon the trees through green leaves, adding vitality to the old, serene trees. In the center, a beautiful sky and layers of clouds give a depth of space. This renders additional vastness to the picture - clouds come and go, the land is open, and the sky is high. Lin has pondered on Taiwan’s history for long. He knows that cultural identity in Taiwan can be different from time to time, depending on the circumstances. His “Taiwan spirit” is not confined by enclosed regionality, but rather open to external influences. He believes that such influence needs to be understood, cared for, and addressed when it comes to interpreting Taiwan culture. We can perhaps see this artwork as embodiment of the artist’s constructive viewpoint on cultural sedimentation in Taiwan and the development of the Taiwan spirit. No matter how the old trees end up where they are, one needs not know their time of arrival or their kinds. The point is, the trees are now deeply rooted here in Taiwan. While they are independent and charming in their own ways, only when they stand together, abundance and prosperity takes place. Indicating Taiwan’s history through a forest scene, the artist delineates the Taiwan spirit based on diversity. And the key to reconstructing Taiwan’s subjectivity is passing down and expanding the Taiwan history, as well as respecting and learning about different cultures.
