I use hands in this series to present many different things, to create various symbolic meanings, and to form a new language of art. I hope to discuss the interdependent relationships of people through human and social perspectives, and to tell a fable of the world through different hand gestures. This series is inspired by the Taoist statues worshipped at my family’s place. A common case is that most deities have similar faces but hold very specific hand gestures of their own. Thus people can easily distinguish them from the gestures alone. This reminds me that I can use “hands,” something that most Taiwanese people are familiar with, to reflect upon this complicated world and to draw people’s attention. In fact, because hand gestures are flexible, changeable, easily to identify, easy to be mixed and matched, powerful in expressing ideas, and full of symbolic meanings, they can be used as a new language of art. I am also inspired by the Book of Changes. Living in a fast-changing world, I tend to lose my inner peace of mind. I hope to find a good value to practice and a standard to look up to, so that I can maintain the inner peace.
