“Parental Love” by Juang Ding-kuen The work “Parental Love” was created from Juang Ding-kuen’s memories of the tough and hard-working water buffalo when Juang was living in a farming village as a child. Juang uses the parent-child interaction between the water buffalo to show the meaning of the work’s theme. The forms of the buffalo are simplified into a combination of large blocks, and clean lines are used to portray the important features, making the buffalo look more heavyset and strong. While viewers walk around to view the work, they see the extended neck of a buffalo in one moment, and in the next moment the see the baby calf snuggling up against the mother buffalo, then discover that the calf is nothing but a flawless round stone that has a buffalo’s head bulging out from it. No matter what forms the viewers see, they can feel the powerful and solid force that emanates from the work.
