To fulfill my dream of becoming an artist, I moved to Kaohsiung City to learn with Lin Tien-rui in 1961. It was then I began a career in painting. Kaohsiung during that time was full of people hoping to dig gold. Everyone wanted to live a heavenly life of fame and wealth. And I saw that, as economy took off in Taiwan, people also became greedier than ever. The result was an overwhelming number of people who lost all standing and reputation after striking overnight fortune, who were traumatized physically and psychologically, or who had broken souls. This painting is based on my old memories of Kaohsiung. I sympathized with these people, but I could do nothing to save them. In fact, it was extremely difficult for painters to make a survival, as Kaohsiung was described as a “cultural desert” then. (Lin Chia-yen)
