Bloody Beauty is a continuation of A Fabled Shoots (2007) in terms of themes and motifs i.e. special effects of gun fights from TV and Hollywood cinema. The women featured in this video are based on typical female representations from our mainstream television programs. This video explores why violent scenes in popular media are so popular with the audience by repeating the same formula used by many contemporary cinema and TV shows: sophisticated visual effects, exciting plots and a bit of sensationalism. In so doing, this video prompts the viewers to consider what they have been fed by the media, and how they have been fed these contents.
The video footage is filmed by high-speed video cameras which allow me to unfold the special effect of blood splashing in slow motion. In so doing, I try to re-identify the nature of these special effects as simply an object, to drain the violent connotations from this object and turn it into a unique experience in its own right.(Su Hui-yu)
