持扇婦人像 A Woman with a Folding Fan
油畫 Oil Painting
楊三郎 Yang San-lang 1907 - 1995
131.0 x 81.0 cm
Artwork ID 10900002
Created in 1934, this work is considered Yang’s magnum opus, and was selected for showing in the 13th Shunyo Art Exhibition. Hsu Yu-Yen, Yang’s wife, was the model for the painting. The subject occupies the right side of the composition, appearing in a Chinese-style dress with a folding fan in her hand and gazing thoughtfully to front left. Her slightly inclined posture and the arbitrary brushstrokes scattered in the background work together to strike a harmonious structural balance. Apart from the ingenious, unconventional composition, the arbitrary brushstrokes in the background echo the decorative motif on the protagonist’s dress. Overall, the artist’s mastery of simple, deft brushstrokes is clearly manifested in this painting.
