Wagtails are birds commonly seen at waterside flatland and in the vicinity of human dwellings in Taiwan. This captivating work mirrors Kinoshita’s nature-loving lifestyle during his two-decade residency in Taiwan’s Tamsui area during the Japanese colonial period. Both sketching from nature and realism found vivid expression in this painting without compromising the spirit of simplicity inherent in Japanese painting. An ordinary sketch from nature notwithstanding, this work portrays the birds’ motions in a true-to-life fashion. The interesting contrasts between the two wagtails near the reed grass and the painting's vertical form, which guides the line of vision, collectively bring a touch of visual delight to an otherwise unremarkable waterside scene.
