Many artists use “journey” as a metaphor of what goes on in the present, between the past and the present, amidst dreams and reality, or among depression and hopes. On My Way Home also deals with “journey” as a metaphor. The sculpture shows a young girl standing on a grass field with a toy train in her hands and a mask of a mature woman on her face. What turns this static sculpture into a dynamic installation is the water that falls slowly from her neck. This surrealist “human fountain” invokes many questions, such as “Where is this girl from?” “Where is her home?” “Why is she taking this long journey?” But convenient answers don’t exist. Just on the contrary, On My Way Home proposes a collage of imagery, hints and signs waiting to be decoded and defined. Is the train a symbol of industrialization and cultural development, or that of the girl’s dreams or wicked adventures? Is the water falling down from her neck an exaggerated form of her tears or an indication of domestic violence? Viewers are invited to complete the rest of the narrative as they watch, because life is about a series of inexplicable events and an extension between life and death. Viewers are also asked to revisit their own journeys of life, as well as their dreams and wishes.
