"Ritual of Cathode Ray Tube In this artwork, the images are seen as a musical score penetrating the screen (interface), and the fact that optics are transmitted from the cathode ray tubes to the human eye is considered a recurring ritual. Using “desire” as a means, the artist delves into what’s behind media reportage, hoping to present an event as the way it is. It shows how public discussions are strangely influenced by media in the ever-sickening Taiwanese society. People are easily incited. Some seem confounded by this whole absurdity. The installation is designed to look like news broadcasts. The videos are shown through five channels at once, and their runtime is the same with a typical news broadcast. Together they provide multiple views, images and narratives to the audience, just like SNG reports that run in different linear times, sometimes in sync and sometimes disparaging. Lens-dissecting Images in Continuity Ritual of Cathode Ray Tube & 51 Pieces of Original Paint Paper Animation I try to reveal the production process of an artwork, such as painting or installation, by an individual artist in my animations. It took me one year and a half to complete Ritual of Cathode Ray Tube. I used thousands of my own drawings to make moving images in the most traditional way—I drew these static pictures by hand. In this way, I hope to challenge the standard production mode in the present-day film industry. I only used the most representative and meaningful drawings to make storyboards. I think in this way I can retain the initial inspirations while presenting my art more comprehensively.
