I initiated the Truck series in 1980. I focused on the industrial city of Kaohsiung, hoping that I could present truthfully the current circumstances and people’s feelings.
Kaohsiung in the 1980s had a smell of rust. Big chimneys of oil refineries and petrochemical plants made the skyline of Kaohsiung industrial-looking. A wide range of trailers and containers rushed about on the streets. The vibes of the city could be felt everywhere.
Some of the common objects in Kaohsiung, such as trucks and motor cycles, are used as my “creative vocabulary” in this series. This is a reflection and an observation of an industrial city in southern Taiwan. (Chen Shui-tsai)
