The Puppet Bridegroom is a continuation of French Chair in Taiwan (1997-1999) as a type of conceptual art. In each series, an object poses itself against various backgrounds, such as “a puppet exported to the United States” and “a chair imported to Taiwan.” The objects were then delivered back to their places of origin after shooting. By way of staged photography, I hope to discuss imported/exported cultures and their influence on the general public and individuals. This series is essentially based on family photos that represent my mental images. They reflect my thoughts on the American culture as an expat, as well as the sorrow of being separated from my family. Like most documentary photography works, The Puppet Bridegroom applies a variety of images and incorporates formalism, expressionism and conceptual art. (Yu Ben-kuan)
