Like a mother carrying her baby in her arms, the ocean embraces Taiwan with its wavy waters. Born in this island country, when I was a child, I had the luxury of watching the ocean and playing in its waves all the time. While studying in college, I frequented the Northeast Coast, too. I loved to sit by the shore alone and quietly listen to the waves tapping strange rocks. One can say I have a special affection for the seas. And I believe that “if you don’t cross the ocean, you will never see what’s on the other side of it.” So, one day, I crossed the ocean by myself and arrived in Japan. From that moment on I felt the face of the ocean had changed. It was no longer the ocean I was once familiar with. It looked a little distant and more mysterious then. I had no idea what lied ahead in life…
This artwork was made during my doctoral study at the Aichi University of the Arts in Japan. Just while I worked on this project, the regretful 311 Earthquake took place. After the quake, I became lost about life and my existence. I felt like an ocean that slowly sank into the dark. The sinking was so heavy that I was shaking and scared.
Perhaps, soon, a beam of moonlight would cast upon me. Before that, I must keep walking forward in big steps.
