Concentration (I)” by Li kuang-yu “Concentration (I)” is a work by Li kuang-yu. The work shows a Buddha with a relaxed expression, leaning on a hand with graceful and round lines. The blue sky and white clouds overhead form a flowing and ever-changing background, giving the work a serene and tranquil feel amidst the noisy surroundings. The Buddha head, with its closed eyes and facial expression that makes it look as if its lost in thought, reminds people of the work “Sleeping Muse” by the contemporary European sculpting master Constantin Brâncuşi. These two works share the same clean, simple forms and clear, flowing curved lines, with the only difference being the clearness and tranquility of the facial features in Li’s work, giving it an Eastern style and feel. That, along with the traditional shape of the Buddha hand, has given an air of modernism to the traditional Buddhist sculpting themes and forms in Li’s work.
