This piece serves also as an ideal calendar, as it draws inspiration from the 24 Solar Terms, which have long guided the agricultural activities in Chinese society. It features a couple of auspicious monkeys, which signify wealth and good fortunes, living a happy, healthy life according to the order of the Solar Terms. The comic elements echo the joyful atmosphere of the festive season. The Spring Monkey covered by green leaves signifies the warmth of the spring; the Summer Monkey consumes ice cream to escape the heat of the summer. The Autumn Monkey enjoys the harvest season, and the Winter Monkey is building a snowman and enjoying a hot bath. All of these correspond to the message of the spring couplet, that everyday and every season of the year can be enjoyed to the full. The word for the Chinese-style gate, which in Mandarin sounds the same as the word for the “lord”, signifies career promotion, whereas the peach tree signifies longevity and a big, happy family. The elegant colors match the merry message of the festivity.
