Grand View of Tashan Born in Chiayi, Lin Yu-shan already visited the Alishan region several times when he was young. Although he left a good number of sketches of Tashan (one of the mountains in Alishan) and the indigenous Tsou people, a large landscape like this is uncommon. Tashan is famous for its rugged, step-like mountain walls, which are emphasized in the distance. But the texturing of the mountain walls and the hanging pine tree in the foreground clearly derive from traditional landscapes. This shows the author’s attempt to truthfully present nature while retaining Chinese painting traditions.
