Regardless of the traditional weaving techniques or modern CAD jacquard weaving tools and nontraditional metallic or warm cotton materials, I tried to create a woven textile that was relieved of its practicality but rather revealed my inner state of mind.
The tightly woven threads criss-cross to form a flat but still three-dimensional structure. I am extremely fascinated by this process and the physical end-result. Even though the weaving process is time consuming and not as directly expressive as painting a picture, I personally intended to use the weaving technique – highly instrumental and decorative – in my creations. I hope to be able to discover the artistic values of woven pieces through this method.
Body Atlas I creates the embossed effects on the human figures by uniquely varying the tension and speed of weaving. This area casts a distinct light and shadow effect by shining different lighting effects.
Compared to my earlier three-dimensional works, this piece places emphasis on the flattened shapes and the faint shadows. (Huang Wen-ying)
