"Boiling steam, plug adapters for different countries, Datung rice cookers and aromatic rice… Foaming Weariness is a highly autobiographical work. It truthfully reflects the three years I spent in London. Like tens of thousands of aspiring international students who pursue further studies in the West, I went to the UK in 2008. I thought that living overseas means having a different, if not better, life. But I was baffled by cultural differences and ill adjustment. I tried hart to fit in. I did my best to sharpen my language skills, act like a real English person, and adopt a western mindset, so that I could become a part of the West. But, in times of frustration, I was relentlessly reminded that I’m different from my western counterparts. I became edgy and doubtful. Perhaps it’s impossible to change—it’s really not necessary to change. I felt my mind as confounded and entangled as the adapter plugs and sockets that seem to extend on and on. I was constantly at the boiling point like a worn out rice cooker.
