According to statistics from the Bureau of Pharmaceutical Affairs, Department of Health, as of 2009, there were more than three million users of sleeping pills. I once had a special encounter with Stilnox, a kind of sleeping pill, by chance. Inspired by this experience, I created this video piece and entitled it Stilnox Home Video: the Midnight Hours. What I hope to express is the unusual sensations I felt when watching TV after taking pills. It is quite common for one to take pills to have better sleep these days, and I am no exception. However, one evening, after taking Stilnox, I forgot that I should stay in bed, and soon entered a world without sleep. As the little pill took effect, I lit up a cigarette and gazed at its smoke and the TV screen. Then, the living room started to contract at a fast speed, and the smoke puffs also began to expand up to several times of their normal size. Even the characters in the TV program began to stage a psychedelic reality show for me. Augmented by Stilnox, the TV images brought unprecedented visual impacts on me. TV and medicine, two common elements in life, subverted themselves outside the box on one unexpected night. And I, by accident, became fascinated by them.
