In light of the massive damages brought about by Typhoon Morakot in August 2009, the Vision of Taiwan series explores possibilities for critical reflection and change amid the current climate of greater demand for environmental awareness. The deadly typhoon uprooted a devastating number of living trees and turned them into driftwood by the sea. Although the sight of the driftwood might appear spectacular, the breathtaking sight itself implies a sharp sense of absurdity and even a deadly environmental crisis – just like the bright flash of light which, despite its glorious beauty, may cause burn and blindness. However, when we are finally forced to face the harsh realities of our surrounding environment, we are inclined to lose sight of what's really important, as if we were detached from these realities and sucked into a state of vacuum. As the sound of guns firing screeches through the sky, we are drawn into a world full of the aesthetic of destruction and death while turning a blind eye to the environmental crisis.(Wu Cheng-chang)
