The version in NTMoFA’s collection was drawn ceaselessly on a blank sheet of paper by the KUKA robotic arm for four months. With the same visual perspective as human beings, the robot carried out a lengthy drawing process well beyond human physical capabilities. The resultant work prompts viewers to think about whether the subject-object relationship between humans and machines, a product of the second industrial revolution, will be reversed by ongoing technological advances. Moreover, the imbricated lines in the piece depict a utopia where humans and machines co-exist in a symbiotic relationship. This large-scale (200 x 600 cm2) sophisticated drawing created by an automated machine is indicative of technology’s drawing techniques and skills. Furthermore, the “creative activity” itself highlights the “aura” of artworks that Walter Benjamin proposed, reflecting on the nature of the “creative subject” when machines produce art in the contemporary context.
