As we enter the new millennium, every mode of human behaviors is facing the prospect of significant changes. It is widely acknowledged that the body language and movement have always been a significant part of human communication and civilization. However, with the help of the widespread of informational technologies, these body movements and languages have been fast spreading beyond the realm of our past imagination. Today, as soon as our networks are connected, we can see the media all over the world infinitely extending their reach, opening a door that allows us to bring the traditional forms and concepts into the wider world and to touch our deepest emotions and feelings.
In the early 1980s, the computer and informational technology injected a touch of humanity into our increasingly mechanicalized material world. During this period, the combination of all the ideas, feelings and personal intentions embedded in our society remained the foundation of my own intellectual and artistic pursuits. My work represents a multiplicity in unity, combining rational analysis, emotions and feelings. At a time when the economy, politics, religion and ethics have all become part of our collective psyche, they would be integrated with our feelings and emotions, and go on to be articulated in works of visual art which embody the Zeitgeist of our time.
I have been profoundly concerned about the social situations of Taiwan in recent years, and have been trying to address some of the key issues with my artwork. While the diversity and vitality of the social conditions has been unparalleled, the social-economic conflicts and varied political ideas we have been presented with also indirectly led to a considerable deal of physical confrontation and social unrest which inspired my artwork. To be more specific, my works try to explore the complex psychological, psychosocial, and emotional structures underneath these social phenomena.
As the range of knowledge increases and widens every year, definitions of art would multiply. It should be emphasized that art should not necessarily be created by artists or designers alike; it is one thing that can be achieved by anyone and everyone. As political consciousness and knowledge grow more prevalent in the broad culture, people would seek to improve the quality of life through art. I feel strongly about the consequences of environmental and cultural degradation as a result of rapid industrialization. This prompts me to make artworks which would touch more people's hearts by interacting directly with the environment and producing mutually-affecting energy. In terms of the techniques, I emphasize absolute creative freedom, exhausting all means in the recording and visualization of our everyday experience.
