As the paint leaves the brush, the texture of pigments and brushstrokes begins to show some characters. As far as I am concerned, painting is all about measuring the mental distance between myself and the object of my art. This has always been the way I see things: to slowly get closer to the object and try to capture the feeling that arises before it slowly fades away. I want to establish a dialogue with the viewers through the images and atmosphere that were formed as I physically processed the mediums. I hope that the atmosphere which derives essentially from the texture of pigments will evoke the viewer's feelings and emotions. When the texture of the mediums is transformed into an atmosphere of the image, the original meaning of the image would change, too, creating a space for open dialogue. What I try to do is to capture the peculiar sense of time and the hidden poetic atmosphere. Transience and fragmentation are the words that most accurately describe how I feel about our environment. The theme of this painting is inspired by how we use our most familiar visual media, such as photography, television, computer, the internet and cinema. I find the mosaic effect to be an ideological code that most effectively reveals one's consciousness. When we add mosaic effect to a certain image, even the most ordinary view would immediately appear extraordinary. As far as I am concerned, painting is about measuring the mental distance between myself and the object of my art; it is how I locate myself in relation to all the emotions that keep building up and then fading away. We now live in a state of uncertainty in terms of, for example, our national identity. We are constantly overwhelmed by the sensation-seeking mass media which try to grab everyone's attention the whole time. Amidst the explosion of information, we have no way of telling if we are getting closer to the truth, or if the truth is in fact being buried underneath layers and layers of unsubstantiated myth. Living in a state of constant change like this, we are having to keep re-locating and re-defining ourselves. However, people seem to lose sight on what is important, or what we should focus on. Worse still, we seem to be afraid of getting to the bottom of the true nature of our quest – that it originates from our greed for money and power, and our grave sense of inferiority. Uncertainty seems to define the character of our world, forcing us to constantly seeking answers. Scene by scene, I try to present the fragments of our everyday life which may reveal how we look at the world and how we locate ourselves in relation to the constantly changing atmosphere of our world. In doing so, I am also searching for our collective memories as well as the poetic atmosphere that is at the heart of those memories.(Shiu Sheng Hung)
