Democracy and NBA 2005 Realism and pan-Classism Oil on Canvas with acrylic base My recent work combines the artistic vocabulary of realism and the introspective spirit of classicism. I made the decision after carefully reviewing the situations regarding the social texts and popular culture of our time, hoping to minimize the gap between my artwork and social representations. Amid the current trend which seems to see expressionism dominating contemporary art, I am striving for an "ordinary but meaningful" approach to art which, I hope, would also correspond to the spirit of our time and reflect the ideals of an intellectual. I appropriate a method that I call "compressing history" in the composition of Democracy and NBA. In the painting, Dr. Sun Yat-sen sits on a modern-style sofa with an egg in his hand. The unhatched egg signifies an unfulfilled wish for a state of mature democracy. I fuse together the images of Dr. Sun Yat-sen, NBA stars and laurel-holding angels, to signify a broad vision on human history. More specifically, I try to trace the history of democracy in Asia and communicate my observation on the politics of contemporary Taiwan.
