The Orchid Island (a.k.a. Lanyu) is best known for its indigenous people and culture. Some of the most significant cultural symbols relating to the Orchid Island include the thongs, the canoe and the canoe-launching ceremony, as well as the famous “flying fish season” which takes place every year late in the second month of the lunar calendar. Traditionally, a flying-fish calling ceremony is performed just before the flying-fish season to pray for a bountiful harvest of flying-fish. In Mandarin Chinese, “fish” sounds the same as “abundance”. The image of the flying-fish season symbolizes a year of abundance and prosperity.
