“Guarding” by Wang Shiou-chi
Wang Shiou-chi graduated from the Sculpture Department in the Fine Art College at the National Taiwan University of Arts. Wang’s work “Guarding” has a realistic style, and he uses symbolic clothes and the dog beside the person to express the ideal of the theme. The strong and burly man in the work is straddling a stone with several straight lines carved in it. His left hand is placed on his left knee, his right hand is petting the dog, and his face is tilted slightly to the side while looking forward. The dog is also looking forward while in the same pose as the man. The man and dog wear gaunt and alert expressions, and the unique texture of Guanyin stone clearly shows the muscles and bone structures of the man and dog, giving the work a primitive and rustic aesthetic.
