Rocks are one of my favorite subjects. I always seek a better way to present the hardness of rocks and their many different forms. I also like to depict the uncanny coastal erosions and the magnificent views of the Pacific Ocean. Such are also the two greatest features of the East Coast of Taiwan. The rocks in the picture are by nature hard and lifeless. But when they are presented together with the dynamic, vivacious ocean that seems to expand on and on, the uttermost beauty between two extremes is achieved and I am always touched by it. It is a big challenge, however, to show the roughnessof rocks and the tenderness of the ocean at once. This artwork is based on two size 100 canvases, and its total length is near size 500. The two pictures can be appreciated separately, and the ocean and the rocks are respectively presented through advanced techniques. But when they are placed together, they show a grander view and a different kind of originality. The rocks seem to have a richer and more diverse texture, while the ocean look more majestic and expansive. (Lin Sheng-hsiung)
