This precarious bridge crosses the Erchung River in Tanei, Tainan. It was built in the 1980s, when corruption was at its most rampant. The bridge was build with mortar and no steel beams, no wonder it broke down in less than ten years. It is an example of the collusion between corruptive government officials and contractors. This photo was taken just before sunset when students came home from school. The villagers had no choice but to cross this dangerous bridge everyday.
