“Exhibit” by by Shie Dung-liang
Shie Dung-liang graduated from Sculpture Department in the Fine Art College at the National Taiwan University of Arts. The work “Exhibit” is the representative work in the “Circle” series. Shie is proficient in T'ai Chi Ch'uan, thus he tries to express the “Opening and closing of the yin and yang” concept in sculptural form. The “Sending and receiving” and “Yin and yang” concepts in T'ai Chi Ch'uan open, extend, and overlap within the work, and the outer appearance of the work shows the characteristics of the “Seeking squares in circles” and “Curves become circles” concepts. The unification and changes present in the work are a metaphor for the symbiotic relationship between the traditional and modern. This work was shown in the square in front of the National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts when it opened in 1988, symbolizing the hope that the Museum can innovate and pass on the torch to future generations.
