The Chinese title, “Lu Tsi(旅次),” refers to a place where one stays overnight during a journey. Hats hung on the walls, on the other hand, represent traces of the travelers that come and go over the course of time. The number of hats continues to rise, almost to the extent of resembling fungus growing in this narrow space. I am inspired by my childhood impression of my great uncle to create this artwork. My great uncle always wore a gentleman’s hat when he visited my family in the countryside. Someone put a nail on a wall, and that served as a hat hanger especially for him. The nail stayed on even after he passed away. When I was a child, whenever I looked at the nail, I thought of my great uncle and his hat, both of which no longer existed in this world. To create this artwork, I smeared layers of soil onto the hats to make them coarse and heavy, as if they were historic objects of the past. Then, I hung these many hats on a wall to symbolize the travelers who visited the same place at different times. In the end, life is a journey, and we are all travelers passing by.
