Previously an unknown, remote village in Gansu Province, western China, Yellow Sheep River received wide public attention after Mr. Wen Sayling (1948-2003), IT entrepreneur, writer and philanthropist, embarked on a project to "wire the west of China with the Internet, to raise the hopes and dreams.” When I first arrived in the village of Yellow Sheep River, my first intention was to document Mr. Wen's ambitious and challenging project. However, once I got there, I discover something which was even more riveting and artistically promising topic than the project itself – that is, the village children's fascination with computers, as well as how the children's creative imagination was induced by external stimulants. I therefore decided to shift my focus from documenting Mr. Wen's project to concentrate on articulating the village children's hopes and dreams. This series of works explore the relationship between people and their dreams. By foregrounding the dialectic relationship between the narrator and the narrated, the photographer and the photographed, this piece of “meta-photography” also redefines the artist as a mediator which plays an active role in constructing the visual representation of the community and events.(Chou Ching-hui)
