The Longshan Temple Album is a series of 35mm still photographs I took along with the 16mm television documentary Folk Festivals in Taiwan of which I produced during 1951-1961. The album was on exhibition at the Rose Marie Gallery (Taipei) from November 25th to December 5th in 1961, and I had the great pleasure of inviting Mr. Yu You-ren (then president of the Control Yuan) and Master Bai Sheng as the guests of honors. The exhibition was an overwhelming success with over ten thousand visitors over the ten days. Longshan Temple Album was inspired by the temple architecture, the exquisite carvings, the worshipping worshippers, and daily gatherings of the common people. Critics thought that my Longshan Temple Album was too gray. However, that was during a time of high tension after the 228 White Terrors in Taiwan, and is a realistic portray of the bleak helplessness as demonstrated by the people. (Huang Ze-xiu)
