Being an artist, my aim is to create interesting and moving visual experiences and let my feelings flow during the creative process. I have always enjoyed drawing with a pen or a pencil. A lot of my inspiration derives from the unique qualities and beauty of the materials or Media, and sometimes the medium itself may even trigger inspiration for further three-dimensional installation projects. I have now created a series of works which I call "drawing installation". Entitled "I Am Mia Liu", this piece was inspired by my previous experience of working at the box office of the Guggenheim Museum, New York. In my capacity as a box office clerk, I had to serve and communicate with visitors who came from all over the world and spoke English with all sorts and different levels of accents. A ticket which cost $18 was their pass to the wonderful world of art. I often wondered what made the visitors fly all the way to see those works of art, and what their views on art would be. On the other hand, as an artist myself, I dream that to one day I can have my exhibition at Guggenheim Museum. Suddenly it dawned on my mind that I could use the Museum tickets as the material for art. The physical nature of the Museum tickets transformed a piece of drawing into three-dimensional installation which allowed for multiple viewing angles. Besides, I also replaced my usual drawing with my own signature. What I try to convey with this piece is that art is inspired by details of our everyday lives (such as museum tickets), rather than the great art museum. Printed with the logo of Guggenheim Museum, each of the tickets can be seen to symbolize the top of hierarchy in the art world, whereas my signature signifies the artist's own desire and aspirations. This piece serves as a meeting point between the top art institution and the artist's personal experiences and feelings. (Liu Wen Hsuan)
