I was a college student between 1962 and 1965. I learned the latest ideological trends from western literature, painting, film and drama, and began to question what stands between existence and nihility. Is it human body? Is it human souls? If not, what about light and shades? Is there nihility in existence? Does nihility exist at all? It happened that, while I brooded over the questions, I had a camera in my hands. Since then, I have not been able to stop seeking what truly exists and what not. What I’m looking for is not some physical landscape, but a spiritual aura or a state of being. I hope to express total silence, void or loss. Sometimes I also attempt to show a subtle vision or longing. Perhaps I want to evoke restless energy, too. Reality exists; it seems to exist and not exist at the same time. People are the same; they seem to be here or were here before, although only traces of their existence are found. Because people tend to feign in front of a camera, no candid statements may be made by a photographer. S/he could only quietly wait for that right moment. The precious moment captured, therefore, can be regarded as condensed eternity. It is in bewildering ecstasy that I find spiritual comfort and freedom for myself. (Chang Chao-tang)
