This painting features three ordinary-looking men. Their hilarious looks and cross-dressing style indicate how eager Taiwan was to get rid of a domesticated social body and defy the norms after the lifting of the Martial Laws. HUANG Chin-Ho “de-deifies” the gods and calls them hooligans. On the one hand, this painting is a poignant satire on the totalitarian regime. On the other, these robust and solemnlooking characters embody the rise of the people and a grass-root Taiwanese identity.
