Tse Su-Mei created this work in 2015 when she was an artist-in-residence at the Villa Medici in Rome, Italy. It owed its inspiration to Yukiguni (Snow Country), a novel by Japanese author Yasunari Kawabata. The novel begins with the depiction of a scene completely covered in snow. The compositional elements in this work comprise the white gravel on the ground and the sharp contrast between light and shadow, a composition bearing more than a passing resemblance to a minimalist abstract painting. Meanwhile, the sound that the performer produces by raking over the gravel forms a minimalist musical composition characterized by a monotonous regularity. In the artist’s view, the action is tantamount to a ritual of “erasing” of history, both her own and the venue’s, a ritual that enables her creativity to intervene in this history-laden space.
