At first glance this seems like a classical Chinese chrysanthemum painting, but it is actually a photograph of a tattoo. Here the body becomes a kind of medium like a silk scroll recording fading lines and freshly cut lines forming shading and variations in the ink. This is like waiting for ink to dry when painting, but the process here is magnified and longer. I photograph the healing wound, a sight people can't bear to watch, and combine this with cultural symbols such as literati painting of birds and flowers, giving the work a dialectical quality.
