Confucianism founded by Confucius has remained the core of the Chinese culture for thousands of years. The nationalist government even implemented the Confucian doctrines in Taiwan on a massive level as they relocated here after the Chinese Civil War. The beard of Confucius in this artwork grows out of the frame, extending far and beyond into the exhibit space. On the one hand, it symbolizes the lasting influence of Confucianism from the past to the present. But because the beard is entangled and disorderly, it also suggests that it has become more difficult to pass down the Confucian culture in the contemporary times or to define Taiwan in the face of cross-strait conflicts and globalization.
