This piece deals with issues relating to low employment rates and low wages among Taiwan's young people. It appears that the younger generation in this country tend to take a rather pessimistic view of their own future. Needless to say, life is hard when one can barely make ends meet. However, we have put up with such hardship for far too long and eventually lost the ability to assess the reasonableness of the reward.
IRON MAN embodies the artistic style of the younger-generation artists. It can be seen to illustrate certain artistic qualities which characterized our post-colonial era. In terms of artistic styles and techniques, this piece uses collage, juxtaposition, and appropriation art, whereas in terms of the subject matter, it shifts the focus of concern from metaphysical thinking to issues relating to everyday life. I believe that a work of contemporary art should not only illustrate contemporary issues, but also inquire into future possibilities of art. In the past, video art has permitted the artist to express personal opinions and philosophical ideas, to reflect artistic styles of different times, and to explore how images may engage in redefinition of time and space. With IRON MAN, I try to engage video art in addressing contemporary social issues while at the same time attempts to “re-mould” our society with modern media, to intervene in everyday life with an art project, and to express my socialist position.
