Taiwanese history and society are quite complicated. The “Phantom of History” series wish to contemplate living in the world through arts. This series include three video clips, and all of them are like 8 mm movies, flickering like some old color film. They are like ghosts in history, haunting the viewers, giving them a strange and naughty smile out of the blue. The creator extends his unique criticism to the work, writing down one after another humorous yet thought-provoking remarks. They might seem quite political and focus heavily on the issue of Taiwan’s sovereignty. In fact, however, it does not aim to tell history or to provoke certain ideology; it does not have any intention related to politics or any preference for any political party. Instead, it wishes to manifest the absurd situation that is hidden in and beyond human willpower: it tries to show the absurd behavior of its own to manifest an even bigger absurdity. Facing the future ahead, Taiwan might have to deal with many ghosts of dictators, usurpers, cynics, hypocrites, etc. But the real ghost does not come from the outside but inside: our hearts are the real historical ghost that we have to face and fight.
