Clothing is probably one manmade object physically closest to one’s body when it is used. Somewhere between organic and unorganic, it keeps our animal instincts from jumping out in a civilized society. It is a shield, a beautification, a cover, and a veil. The most expansive clothing on earth, perhaps, is a space suit that protects an astronaut when he or she explores the vicious universe. The suit, entirely composed of high-tech mechanical gadgets, is what keeps the astronaut alive in the extremely hostile outer space. Our elegant, civilized life is also made possible by these omnipresent, refined technologies. Humanity, likewise, can only look as flowing and free as the beautiful garment in this artwork when supported by tiny, refined, yet extremely heavy gadgets. Finally, the water sleeves can only flow so beautifully when a heavy price is paid, just like the Wright Brothers failed so many times before they finally went up to the sky. (Huang Hsin-chien)
