Gaze is the first piece of work in my new media art series, Observe (2009). By means of human face and expression recognition technology, I try to revise a classic philosophical question “if a tree falls in a forest, and no one hears it, does it make a sound?” into a new question: “If a piece of artwork is viewed by no one at all, is it a work of art?” When the viewer sits in front of the projection screen looking at this piece, a snapshot of the viewer's face is taken and processed by the computer into an image that mimics a typical family photograph. Every person in this image wears the mask of the viewer, looking as if the viewer was gazing back at herself. The viewer thus becomes an intruding onlooker who gazes at this surreal picture which has evolved from a photograph of her own face.（Huang Hsin-chien）
