In addition to listening with one’s ears, is there any other way to feel sounds? This is one question that The Kong‧Qi-Installation series reflects upon. Sounds are produced when the oscillation of pressure is transmitted through a certain medium. In most cases, people hear sounds when the pressure is transmitted through the air. Many other media, however, can also transmit pressure and makes sounds “felt.” For instance, one can feel the vibration of floors when a mining truck rumbles by. At a concert, one can also feel the surges of low-frequency music sounds. Inspired by phenomena as such, The Kong‧Qi-Installation series uses a sensor to detect objects. Depending on the distance of the objects, sounds are produced in different tempos through an electromagnetic valve that blows the air. In this way, the air becomes a medium with substantial volume, and spectators can be “attacked” by sounds in a humorous way.
