Wanxiang is a deserted tannery. I re-present old-time images and people’s memories of Wanxiang through two videos and an architectural model in this artwork. The video includes several individual interviews and personal accounts on the tannery. The model itself is a Wanxiang miniature, in which an archaic 8mm film found in the tannery is projected. The film actually recorded the tannery staff’s trip to Japan for learning professional skills.
An artist is like an archeologist. He or she constantly looks for memories, which resonate in old places like Wanxiang. I wonder how I can intervene in the tannery’s history, and how faintly memories are related to reality. Thus, I place history and memories along two axes. I believe that, when the two meet, a new, truth-based history shall be born.
