In recent years, I have been living in various Asian countries in my capacity as a resident artist in several programs. Being particularly interested in and sensitive to symbols, I often find myself fascinated by the traditional cultural symbols that can often be found in temples, museums and books. I discover that these traditional cultural symbols, which emerged from various similar but different historical-cultural contexts, may appear similar at the first sight, but as we take a closer look, we would realize their differences. These traditional cultural symbols, which can roughly be understood in the category of the “pan-Asian cultural symbols”, are often inscribed in the temple, or traditional cultural artifacts such as costumes, arts and crafts. My work takes these symbols out of their original contexts and replace them, along with new symbols of pop culture, in the context of our everyday life. I reinvent the traditional symbol by giving it a new color and composition. (Lee Szu Hui)
