The Story of Hoping Island was filmed in the shipbuilding plant on the Hope Island, Keelung, Taiwan. The shipbuilding plant has a rich history spanning 88 years. During the era of Japan Colonial Rule, it was one of the military shipbuilding plants of the Japanese Empire, serving as a military-transport infrastructure which supported Japan's 'Go-South' policy. After the defeat of Japan in WWII, the Chinese Nationalist government took over Taiwan from Japan. During the post-war era, the shipbuilding plant made a significant contribution towards the economic growth in Taiwan particularly from the 1970s onwards. In this sense, the shipbuilding plant can be seen to encapsulate the history of Taiwan from the time of WWII to the present day as well as reflect the local identity. Any nation state is keen on inventing myths of national origins just as well as creating a beautiful picture of hope for the future. To reinforce the national myths, all nation-building practices would involve inventing, reinventing or reinstating traditions including ceremonies, rituals and building construction such as the shipbuilding plant. And this documentary is an attempt to paint a different picture of the history of the shipbuilding plant. In this documentary, the narrator – an elderly Taiwanese woman near 90 years old who received primary education during the era of Japan Colonial Rule and later worked in the shipbuilding plant – gave a detailed account of how things were back then. At the same time, the artist creates a fictional creature to bring together various threads of history, personal memories and dreams in an attempt to present the dominant narrative with a personal account of the history.
